Glen Ryan

Glen is an experienced litigation and dispute resolution lawyer, with a focus on achieving his clients’ objectives.
He has practised as a litigator for over 20 years. Prior to joining Canterbury Chambers in August 2025, he was a litigation lawyer in firms in both New Zealand and Sydney. Most latterly he was a litigation partner at White Fox & Jones in Christchurch for almost 12 years.

Glen graduated from the University of Canterbury with First Class Honours in Law in 2002. Since then, he has managed a broad range of civil disputes, but with particular focus on contract and commercial disputes, insolvency matters, insurance, real and personal property disputes, and trusts and estates matters.

Glen believes in tailoring his approach to disputes to the particular circumstances of each client and case. Sometimes this involves progressing to a court hearing, but sometimes it also involves exploring alternatives such as mediation, arbitration and expert determination, and Glen is experienced in all of these forums.

Glen is available to accept instructions to advise and/or appear in any of the areas listed below.

He is able to take direct instructions (not requiring an instructing solicitor) in certain matters.

McEvedy v McEvedy [2023] NZHC 3875 – successful application for security for costs, and successful opposition to application for orders freezing a trust.

Boult v Cain [2023] NZCA 542 – successful appeal challenging a liquidators’ decision in relation to proposed release of documents to a liquidation committee.

Boult v Crux Publishing [2022] NZCA 473 – successful appeal against decision granting media outlet access to documents on court file.

Moffitt Dairy v Hazlett [2020] 15 TCLR 690 – application to set aside a statutory demand in context of a dispute regarding quality of agricultural seeds.

Cain v Mettrick [2020] NZHC 2125 – successful application for stay of proceedings on basis of the terms of a litigation funding agreement.

Cain v Mettrick [2019] NZHC 802 – successful application by a defendant seeking access to details of the identity of the plaintiff’s litigation funder.

Baroni Foods v PK Wholesale Supplies [2017] NZHC 335 – successful action by food importer relating to purported rejection by customer of several large international food orders. Involved a number issues under Sale of Goods legislation.

Official Assignee v van Heerden [2016] NZHC 360 – successful application challenging the OA’s assessment of available income to contribute to bankruptcy.

Cares Appliances v Smiths City [2014] NZHC 1979 – successful application for further and better discovery to assist proper quantification of loss, in context of a proceeding relating to purported termination of a commercial supply contract.

Re Kijurina [2014] NZHC 115 – successful application for insolvency practitioners, confirming their challenged appointment as voluntary administrators.
