Anna Ryan is a commercial barrister at Canterbury Chambers specialising in competition and consumer law. She has nearly 20 years’ experience in corporate and commercial practice, including a decade leading Lane Neave’s national competition and consumer law team.
Anna has particular expertise in Commerce Act and Fair Trading Act matters. She regularly advises clients involved in Commerce Commission investigations and provides guidance on cartel conduct and statutory exceptions, merger control, misuse of market power, competitor collaboration, and a wide range of other competition and consumer law issues.
Anna holds a Master of Laws from the University of Melbourne in Competition and Consumer Protection Law. She is a long-standing member and immediate past Chair of the Advisory Board of the Competition Law and Policy Institute of New Zealand. She also serves on the Canterbury Branch of the New Zealand Law Society.
Anna has an active interest in competition policy, and has been awarded a 2026 Churchill Fellowship for travel to Australia, the USA and the UK to examine international approaches to the regulation of competition in labour markets. In 2023, Anna was shortlisted for Antitrust/Competition Lawyer of the Year at the 2023 APAC Women in Business Law Awards. In the same year, she was also named as an Elite Woman lawyer by NZ Lawyer magazine.
In addition to her competition and consumer law work, Anna is also an experienced corporate lawyer who has performed legal work for corporates and charities of all sizes across a wide range of sectors. She is also enjoys assisting clients with brand protection matters, including trade mark registrations.
